This class will focus on public speaking, interpersonal communication, group communication, vocal improvement, non-verbal skills, and oral interpretation. In addition, this course will examine the process of communication, theories in communication, famous American orators, and case studies in communication. We begin with an inquiry of cultural experience, working towards an understanding of the commonalities and differences among human cultural experiences as represented in literature and non-fiction from around the world. Students will read widely and deeply and will be asked to write about and research the conflicts that sometimes arise between cultures. Building on their understanding of literature from Freshman English 9, students will delve more deeply into literature and their understanding of language and the writing process. As such, a big focus of the year will be continuing to develop skills associated with analytical and argumentative writing that are central to the exam and English language arts more generally. Over the course of the year, through examination and discussion of texts spanning a number of literary periods and genres, students will broaden their understandings of the ways authors use language to create meaning. In both individual and group settings, students will evaluate ideas and consider implications these ideas may have in their own lives. Students will also have opportunities to write about these opinions and submit pieces to be considered for the All Hallows newspaper, The Blue and White. The aim of these tests, and of this course, is to ensure that students are developing the skills they need for college readiness. Students will read, analyze, and use reason to comprehend challenging literary and informational texts, make careful and deliberate use of evidence as they read and write, and use the writing process to edit, revise, and rewrite a piece before submitting it. Success Stories In my transition from public educator to private tutor, I have already experienced some great success. A 9th grade English student went from an F to a B- in 2 months time as we worked on organization and time management skills. A 6th grade student who struggled honor writing was named the class VIP and recognized for her writing growth and went from a D to a B. In 7th grade, she ended up with an A in Language Arts. An honors student who struggled with writing passed his AP exam with a 4 argumentative receiving a 2 on 9th practice AP essay, and he went from a B- in English to an A. A Pre-Algebra student went from an F to a C and began participating more in grade, understanding the material, and taking better notes.
